SOCIAL, PERSONAL AND HEALTH EDUCATION (SPHE) INCLUDING RELATIONSHIPS AND SEXUAL EDUCATION - GUIDELINES FOR CHRISTIAN PARENTS

Many Christian parents are worried about upcoming changes to Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) curriculum in our schools. This fact emerged in the controversy last year when one concerned former RSE teacher revealed content of a training course in DCU.

Campaign groups and NGOs opposed to Christian teaching are actively pushing forward their controversial agenda in schools. Changes to SPHE have already taken place for pupils who started Junior Cycle in September 2023. For Senior Cycle, the changes began in September 2024 and are to be implemented for year 5 from September 2027. Changes in primary schools are expected from September 2025. Some of these changes risk promoting ‘anything goes’ sexual ethics and the idea that a person’s ‘true gender’ is independent of biological reality. These changes also sever the link between sexuality, commitment, marriage and family - reducing the meaning of human sexuality to consent.

In the document below published by the Christian Institute of Ireland, the context of how we got here is explained and the full meaning of human sexuality and relationships is restated, drawing from the wisdom of the Gospel. This booklet sets out clearly what is changing and what parents, grandparents and others can do to help ensure schools make good decisions.
