A POEM FOR OUR ERA - BLEAK BUT RESILIENT

By Philip Quirke

BLEAK

news-on-a-loop numbs

embedded adverts bombard

the numbness into ennui

smart-phone connects some

disconnects more

atomises, isolates,

foundations shift

pillars crack

edifice crumbles

how now do we See

what Word can we hear

what Grace can come to us ?

the hungers of the heart

unsatisfied

RESILIENT

a monk or nun in the cell

silent celibate alert

winnows wheat from chaff

parenting before dawn

the child held for comfort

hope, and faith, and love

in our war zones:

cries of  the wounded

outreach from peacemakers

for the ragged ones in our cities

an old man, a young girl

fill the food parcels

not by bread alone,

but that too.
